MARK MULHOLLAND is a versatile and original musician and songwriter, whose repertoire spans a wide range of styles and influences. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Mark has been travelling and making his living from playing music for the last fifteen years, and in the process has enriched the cultural life of many places along the way, including Edinburgh, Galway, Prague, Grenoble and Berlin. Based in Berlin since 1996, MARK MULHOLLAND has become a well-known figure on the music scene there. He plays solo and with several bands, including IMPURE THOUGHTS, which has drawn comparisons with The Band, Television and Husker Du, and has gained praise from J. Mascis of Dinosaur Junior; altenative country and acoustic blues project TWO DOLLAR BASH and swing/cajun/chanson group THE HOMEBREW. Mark is also in great demand for collaborations with other musicians, both live and in the studio, with recordings in recent years including work with Nikki Sudden, Phil Schoenfelt, David John Hull, Kevin J. Lymn, Molly Knight, Tony Rose and Einar Stenseng. The regular session that he hosted in various Friedrichshain clubs for the past 5 or 6 years acquired an almost legendary status, and his solo concerts around Berlin have built up a dedicated regular following.
Drawing from an eclectic range of influences including Celtic folk, country, reggae, blues, jazz and rock, Mark has developed a unique and individual style which is unmistakably his own.
His assured and inventive guitar playing encompasses fingerpicking reminiscent of Scottish guitarist Bert Jansch, fine slide playing and a powerful sense of rhythm, combined with a subtle and distinctive voice which is instantly recognisable.
MARK MULHOLLAND´s finely crafted songs include haunting and emotive works which have been compared to Nick Drake, exuberant celebrations of travel, love, friendship and drink, and entertaining parodies of different musical styles, all delivered with a confidence that commands the attention of audiences everywhere.
MARK MULHOLLAND is a performer not to be missed.
Mark’s 2003 album “The Devil on the Stairs”, recorded and co-produced by Australian producer Dugald Jayes, has been remastered and is being released in August as a double album, together with a live concert recording from London in 2005 and a bonus track, by the UK label XIE RECORDINGS/Cadiz Distribution.
